Out of Province Vehicle Inspections

What You Need to Know Before Registering in Alberta

Are you new to Alberta and bringing your vehicle with you? Before you can register it, you’ll likely need an out-of-province Vehicle Inspection (OOP). At Caliber Automotive Ltd., we’re proud to be one of the few AMVIC-licensed shops in Edmonton authorized to perform these inspections, and we go the extra mile to make the process as transparent and stress-free as possible.

What Is an Out of Province Inspection?

The Out of Province Inspection is a detailed inspection required by Alberta Transportation to ensure any vehicle entering the province meets safety and mechanical standards. The program is part of Alberta’s Vehicle Inspection Program (VIP) — and only certified facilities like ours are legally authorized to carry out the out of province inspection in Edmonton.

Important: Not every auto shop in Alberta can legally perform out-of-province Inspections. Only shops licensed and certified through the Alberta Transportation program are permitted to provide this service.

How Caliber Automotive Does It Differently

At Caliber, we combine certified expertise with cutting-edge transparency by performing all inspections digitally. What does that mean for you?

  •  Real-Time Digital Reports – You receive a detailed, easy-to-understand inspection report straight to your phone or email.
  • Photos & Notes – We include images and technician notes to clearly show any issues found during the inspection.
  • Informed Decision-Making – You see what we see, so there are no surprises — just facts and options.

This approach gives you complete confidence in the inspection results and any next steps needed for your vehicle.

What We Inspect

Our technicians follow the strict requirements set by Alberta Transportation, checking your vehicle’s:

  • Brakes, steering & suspension
  • Onboard computer controlled systems
  • Tires and wheels
  • Frame, body, and undercarriage
  • Lights, mirrors, wipers
  • Exhaust and emissions systems
  • Glass, seat belts, horns, and more
  • Air bags system

If something doesn’t meet Alberta’s standards, you’ll know exactly what it is — and we’ll help you correct it.

If you want to go deeper into what the inspection covers take a walk through the inspection guide here. (You will need to open the PDF and then forward to about page 37, where the inspection guide begins)
